| Posted by James Xavier Balandrán at August 25, 2008, 3:56 PM |
The Texas Chi chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity will stage a multi-band benefit concert next month to aid the fight against blood cancers.
The fourth annual “Rock the Campus for the Cure 2008” concert will take place outside the UT Dallas Student Union on Sept. 13. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. All proceeds will go to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
The concert will honor Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity brother Brad Monks, a UT Dallas student who lost a battle with lymphoma in May 2005. After the loss, the fraternity coordinated the first Rock the Campus concert, raising more than $6,500 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
In three years, the event has raised more than $27,000 for the cause.
The concert lineup includes: Forever the Sickest Kids, Sidekick Mafia, Calhoun and other local bands donating their time to the cause. Tickets can be purchased for a $10 donation at the concet Web site.
All proceeds will be donated to the North Texas chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for blood cancer research and patient aid. |

| ‘Jail-n-Bail’ Event Booking Funds for Scholars |
| Posted by James Xavier Balandrán at August 25, 2008, 3:56 PM |
The UT Dallas Staff Council — in partnership with the University Police Department and fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon — recently kicked off the first “Jail-n-Bail” event, aimed at raising $30,000 for scholarships.
Proceeds will be split evenly between the Staff Council Scholarship Fund for staff members and the Officer Bernard F. Parson Memorial Student Scholarship Fund for students.
Donations are being accepted now through Wednesday, Aug. 27. Contributions are welcomed in the form of cash, checks and credit cards, or through a secure site specifically created for the event. All gifts are tax deductible.
Donations can also be made by nominating a “jailbird” — in which someone acts as a snitch to file charges against co-workers or students, who in turn must raise funds for the scholarships to bail themselves out of a mock jail.
A round-up Jail-n-Bail event — scheduled during Welcome Week — will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 27 in front of the Student Union.
According to Chris Dickson, president of the UT Dallas Staff Council and a representative of UT System’s Employee Advisory Council, if every person on campus made a minimum donation of $5, the groups would raise more than $85,000.
“We hope that by increasing awareness and securing donations for these important scholarships, we’re assisting with some of the initiatives outlined in the University’s strategic plan — like preparing our students, academically or otherwise, for the challenges they’ll face in tomorrow’s world,” Dickson said. “The council also strongly supports improving annual giving at the University.”
The fundraiser is also sponsored by the University’s Offices of Development, Alumni Relations, Facilities Management and International Student Services. |

| Fraternity Welcomes Texas Zeta |
| Posted by James Xavier Balandrán at March 2, 2007, 7:40 AM |
| Sigma Alpha Epsilon welcomes its newest colony to the Realm. On February 24, 22 men at the University of Texas at Tyler pledged into the Texas Zeta colony, as it will be classified. The group is a well-rounded, diverse selection of students with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.01. Province Sigma Archon Mike McCrea, along with members of Texas Chi, attended the ceremony as well in their support for the new group. Additional attendees included members of local sororities, campus administrators and faculty adviser Dr. Dana Adams (Texas Christian ’63). This new colony becomes the 11th group in Province Sigma and the first group to be colonized during the spring semester of 2007. Furthermore, they are part of a brand new Greek system blossoming at the University of Texas at Tyler. Our colony is among three new sororities and one new fraternity. |
